SANDAKAN: The Labour Court here on Thursday ordered an employer to pay RM24,669.63 to a former employee for wrongful dismissal.

The court gave Kee Kiong Aluminium Works Sdn Bhd until Oct 30 to pay Lee Tze Liong the sum, failing which the company will face a further penalty of an eight per cent interest per annum.

However, Kee Kiong Aluminum Works Sdn Bhd has the right to appeal within 14 days from the date of judgement.

Meanwhile, in the Sessions Court here a 26-year-old local man was jailed three years and given one stroke of the cane for robbing and threatening a couple with a samurai sword.

Nordin Bin Ondin pleaded guilty before judge Indra Ayub Bin Ayub to committing the offence on June 13, 2009, near the Kg Bokara jetty.

He was charged under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Fellany Bin Siji told the court that the complainant and his female companion were on their way home after dinner at the jetty.

Two men blocked their motorcycle asking for a lighter.

As soon as the couple stopped their motorcycle, the accused demanded that the couple surrender their cellphones and cash.

When the couple refused, one of the accused pulled out a three-foot samurai, forcing the couple to surrender two cellphones worth about RM1,100.

The accused fled after that, while the couple subsequently lodged a police report, the court was told.
