MIRI: Infrastructure Development and Communication Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin proposed another training institute to cope with the oil and gas industry in Miri in anticipation of oil being found on land.

“Nippon Oil is doing land exploration and hopefully Miri can have oil production on land again like before,” Lee said when contacted here yesterday.

“If we could have oil production on land, Miri will be moving toward another era of growth. The people of Miri will be happy with that.”

The assistant minister therefore proposed for another training institute to be set up in Miri for advanced training in certain skills.

“We need specific advanced training in certain fields. I hope the federal government will consider setting up another institute here for advanced skills training such as in Bintulu,” he added.

Lee said it is important to overcome the shortage of workers, especially skilled workers.

This is important if we want to move forward to become a high income nation.

“So human capital development should be given strong emphasis. As  you are aware, the government is paying attention and has set up a corporation to attract talent from overseas to come back to Malaysia,” he added.

Lee was confident the government’s efforts would raise the quality of our workforce to meet the country’s needs.

“The government has set up technical training schools and training institutes, and hopes industries work closely with them. They (the industries) should give feedback to these institutes and to the federal Ministry of Human Resource on the manpower need of the industries,” he added.
