Pandelela deserves reward from state government, says Minos

KUCHING: As the chairman of Bung Bratak Heritage Committee which also covers Kampung Juga, Bau from where Commonwealth Games women’s 10m platform diving champion Pandelela Rinong Pamg comes, Datuk Peter Minos is of the opinion that the diving queen deserves at least something from the state government.

“I personally feel that the state government through a relevant body give Pandelela a special token gift or award of say RM50,000 besides what had been promised to her by the federal government.

“After all Pandelela has brought pride and honour to Sarawak. She makes us all happy, helps put Sarawak in the national sports map and creates Sarawak as a sports powerhouse. This is not an easy feat. Not everybody can do it. Many people can only talk but they cannot do it,” he said.

He said to emerge champion in the Commonwealth Games women’s 10m platform diving, Pandelela had worked very hard and had put everything for it.

“That is grit, determination and the right spirit. If only I am a millionaire I would give her at least RM100,000 in appreciation.

“I must recognise what my fellow Bidayuh achieved for the state, nation and my community.

“If Sarawak wants to say thanks to the diving queen this is the time for it. Please rise to the occasion,” he said yesterday in a conversation with The Borneo Post from his hospital bed in Kuala Lumpur where he was recovering from a backbone operation.

Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Dato Sri William Mawan recently assured that Pandelela will be getting some incentives in recognition of her outstanding achievement.

Mawan was quoted as saying that the diving star is now ranked among the top national athletes like world number ones Datuk Nicol David (squash) and Datuk Lee Chong Wei (badminton) who have secured lucrative endorsement deals through their world-beating feats.

“If we could do the same for Pandelela, it would greatly improve the livelihood of her family as well as inspire budding athletes in Sarawak to follow in her footsteps,” said Mawan.
