SANDAKAN: School authorities should consider making their students who broke the disciplinary rules to participate in recycling activities.
This form of punishment could help to instill in them positive values as well as to help them form their own identity, Deputy Housing and Local Government Datuk Seri Panglima Lajim Haji Ukin said.
“If we do not educate as well as provide them with early awareness about recycling and protecting the environment, they might not be able to inherit a clean, healthy and beautiful environment in the future,” he said.
He also urged schools in Sabah to make recycling a part of the students’ culture thereby instilling into them the need to recycle, so that the students would be more protective of the environment and that they would understand the need to reduce pollution, One way for students to get used to recycling was to join the Nature Club in their respective schools, he said when officiating the Local Agenda (LA) 21 Recycling program at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar 2 Sandakan here two days ago.
On a different note, Lajim who is also Beaufort MP advised parents to not be too dependent on teachers and the schools for their children’s educational success.
Parents would have to play their roles in ensuring their children’s educational development were in line with the assistance and infrastructure provided for by the government.
“The Barisan Nasional (BN) government has prepared various infrastructure and facilities to generate the country’s education sector therefore other than simply giving encouragement to our children, we must support the government towards the realisation of its objective to produce human capital with excellence and quality,” he stressed.
During the event, Lajim also handed over some cleaning equipments to the school and he also presented its excellent students as well as the underprivileged ones with some assistance.
