KUCHING: A 70-year-old man was released on a RM5,000 three-year bond of good behaviour in two local sureties for reckless driving which caused the death of woman.

Nillie Bujang appeared before magistrate Portia Tam Ong Leng who convicted him as charged under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Nillie admitted that he rammed into a motorbike which caused the death of one Remis Besong, 66, nine years ago.

He was initially charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 but his lawyer Fung Lee Fook requested the charge be reduced due to his old age.

Yesterday, he pleaded guilty to the amended charge.

The offence was committed at Mile 4.5, Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan Road about 9.30am on March 25, 2001.

Prior to yesterday’s judgement, Nillie was discharged but not acquitted of two times.

The deceased was Nillieís relative. The accident occurred when a van driven by him hit a motorbike ridden by Remisí husband. Remis herself was riding pillion then.

At that time, Nillie was taking a very sick neighbour to hospital.

Inspector Rojis Baker prosecuted.
