KUCHING: Main Market-listed conglomerate Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMS) was proud to receive news recently that its submission of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) project for the MIPIM Asia Awards 2010, had been short-listed as one of the three finalists in the Best Business Centres category.

MAJESTIC: The BCCK building in Sejingkat, Kuching.

The BCCK is pitted against South Korea’s NHN Green Factory building and the Shanghai International Financial Centre (IFC) – HSBC building.

The winner will be selected through voting by an expected 2,000 delegates from across the Asia region attending the MIPIM Asia conference and exhibition in Hong Kong, on Nov 10 to 12.

The winner will be announced at the MIPIM Asia Awards ceremony to be held on Nov 11.

The MIPIM Asia Awards recognise outstanding real estate projects in the region for their innovation, technical, environmental and architectural qualities.

This year’s finalists were chosen by a prestigious panel of 11 international jury members, who met for nearly 8 hours in a closed-door meeting on Sept 17 in Hong Kong to review 79 short-listed projects for the fourth edition of the MIPIM Asia Awards.

Only three finalists were selected for each of the eight categories by the Jury Panel, and announced at a press conference held in Paris on Sept 21 where MIPIM Asia is headquartered. Apart from business centres, the other categories are best Chinese project, futura projects, green buildings, hotel and tourism resorts, mixed-use buildings, residential developments and shopping centres.

According to CMS Group Managing Director Dato’ Richard Curtis: “We are extremely proud that our BCCK project, the sole Malaysian finalist, has made it to the final round of judging in the prestigious MIPIM Asia regional real estate awards. To be recognised amongst other excellent and modern design finalist projects from China, Korea, Japan and Singapore, is testament of the high standards and benchmarks we set for ourselves and will continue to pursue.”

“We hope that MIPIM Asia delegates will appreciate the BCCK’s many fine qualities which can best be summed up as an architecturally unique rainforest inspired, environmentally sustainable, functional, world-class convention centre located in Kuching, Sarawak”, added Dato’ Richard Curtis.

The MIPIM Asia Awards are considered by many to be the ‘Oscars’ of real estate as the winner of each category is determined by a very large group of leading industry professionals made up of institutional investors, public and private sector organisations, property developers, hotel groups and others.

For this reason, MIPIM Asia Awards’ winners are especially proud to receive this industry recognition of excellence. In 2009, more than 1,900 participants from over 1,000 companies representing 42 countries were present at MIPIM Asia held in Hong Kong.

Located on The Isthmus, Kuching, the BCCK is Sarawak’s first purpose-built world-class convention centre. Easily recognised by its distinctive giant rainforest ‘Ririg’ – leaf-shaped green roof, the BCCK was developed for the Sarawak State Government by CMS’ construction subsidiary, PPES Works (Sarawak). It was designed by local architectural firm, Arkitek KDI.

Fully completed earlier this year, the BCCK’s pillar-free 10-metre high Great Hall and 14 additional meetings rooms have been the preferred venue in East Malaysia for events large and small, local and international.
