EC expects 75% voter turnout

SANDAKAN: The Election Commission is expecting a 75 per cent voter turnout for the Batu Sapi by-election today.

EC chairman SPR Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said the projection was based on feedback from the election machineries of the parties contesting the by-election.

He told this to reporters after visiting the the polling centre at SMK Batu Sapi near here today.

Batu Sapi has 25,583 registered voters.

Abdul Aziz urged Batu Sapi voters to come out early to vote as weather was forecast to be fair in the morning and stormy in the afternoon.

Twelve polling centres will be opened for the by-election with 10 of them open from 8am till 5pm while two — SK Pulau Timbang (984 voters) and SK Segaliud (785 voters) will close earlier, at 3pm and 4pm respectively.

The 10 other polling centres are SMK Agama Sandakan, SK Gas, SMK Batu Sapi, SK Kampung Bahagia, SJK (C) Pei Ying, SK Bandar Sandakan, SJK (C) Cheng Min, SK Karamunting, SK Bandar Dua and Sandakan library, Abdul Aziz said a shuttle bus would be provided for those voting at SJK (C) Cheng Min, as the school is located on a steep incline.

Meanwhile, for the Galas by-election in Kelantan, which is being held simultaneously, Abdul Aziz said the EC expected an 80 per cent voter turnout for it.

He said the voter turnout in the state constituency in the 2008 general election was 81 per cent. – Bernama
