KUALA LUMPUR: Silicon Graphics International (SGI), a high-performance computing solutions provider, is set to make a bigger impact on the Malaysian market following a takeover by Rackable Systems Inc last year.

SGI was previously known as Silicon Graphics Inc.

The company’s managing director cum vice-president for Asia Pacific and Japan, Philip Chua said, much rebranding is being undertaken by the company following its change in name, while offering a wider range of products.

“A challenge now is to sell both SGI and Rackable products,” he told Bernama in an interview in respect of the company’s business and growth strategy in Malaysia.

He also said, SGI needs to have a broader approach to the market compared with previously as it now had more products and technology, to benefit the people.

“With the rebranding, the company is targeting to achieve double-digit growth in the current financial year and to grow faster in Malaysia,” said Chua.

He explained that SGI is seeking to become the leader in technical computing, in terms of products, ability to provide total solutions as well as  market share growth.

“We are not trying to compete with Hewlett-Packard, IBM or the other big names, as we are relatively small. Our focus is more on technical computing,” he said.

Asked about the company’s products, Philip said it has a variety of offerings for cloud computing and high performance computing.

He highlighted that SGI is also supplying a data centre within a container, with the option of an air or water-cooling system.

“Instead of building the normal data centre, we are using a container as the base as it is cheaper and more compact,” he said.

According to Philip, the company is eyeing greater collaboration with government agencies, such as Mimos Bhd.

For the previous financial year ended June 30, 2010, SGI recorded revenue of US$525 million. — Bernama
