KUANTAN: Four people were burnt to death after the Proton Persona car they were in burst into flames following a collision with a trailer laden with coconuts at Km119 Jalan Kuantan-Segamat at 10.30pm yesterday.

Rompin police chief DSP Johari Jahaya said the dead were Rosli Mat Isa, 28, the car driver, and three passengers Md Sharif Nani, 61, Marinah Kambas, 60, and Patimah Ramli, 46.

“All of them died at the scene. The driver of the lorry and his assistant were only lightly injured,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday.

He said the car was travelling from Kuantan to Segamat when the incident happened. He added that it was raining heavily at the time and road conditions were slippery. Johari said the accident happened on a downhill bend and police believed the car skidded before colliding with the trailer which was coming in the opposite direction.

“The car was trapped underneath the trailer before catching fire. The fire also spread to the trailer but its driver and assistant managed to escape in the nick of time,” he said.

The bodies for victims, all of whom were from Taman Ayer Keroh, Melaka, were sent to the Muadzam Shah Hospital. — Bernama
