Many villages and longhouses not connected with electricity supply

SECOND Planning and Resource Management Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan told DUN yesterday that many villages and longhouses in the state were still not connected with electricity supply from the Sesco grid system yet.

In respect of Kedup, there were 65 projects planned for implementation under the National Key Results Area (NKRA) programme which will benefit about 4,000 households.

In case of Tamin, there were 195 longhouses and four villages planned for implementation of Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) projects under the NKRA programme.

Sebuyau folks will see RES project in Tanjung Harapan being implemented in 2010. It will be completed in 2012.

Awang Tengah, also Public Utilities Minister was responding to queries by several members in his winding up speech yesterday.

RES projects in several villages in Batu Danau were also being planned under the NKRA programme except for Rh Agan Siran, Tubai, Rh Ranggau, Ensugai and Rh Kandar.

“Such projects are also being planned in Pantai Damai constituency,” he said.

“With regard to RES in the state, a sum of RM1.75 billion has been provided under the NKRA programme. The focus of the government now is to ensure that the target of 95 per cent coverage set under NKRA programme is achieved,” he stressed.

He explained that those areas with road access shall be connected to Sesco grid system.

For isolated and remote areas, alternative systems such as solar hybrid and micro hydro systems shall be implemented where feasible.

He said many applications for RES projects have been received by his ministry and included in its database for implementation under NKRA programme.

“However, there may still be many areas which are not included yet because the people concerned have not applied. As such, I urged the elected representatives and headmen of villages or longhouses concerned to submit their applications as soon as possible, so that RES projects for their villages or longhouses can be considered for implementation under NKRA programme or under the 10th Malaysia Plan,” he added.
