Nazri: BTN assistant director suspended for racist remark

FEDERAL Territory National Civics Bureau (BTN) assistant director Hamim Husin was suspended and warned on Oct 6, for uttering a racist remark at a Puteri Umno function on Sept 27, Dewan Rakyat heard yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said action was also taken against the principals of SMK Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra, Kulai, Johor and SMK Bukit Selambau, Sungai Petani, Kedah for making racist remarks.

“The two officers were suspended from duty and re-assigned to Johor Education Department and Kuala Muda Education Office effective Aug 23,” he said in reply to a question by Datuk Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjong Piai) on action against civil servants for making racist remarks.

Nazri said disciplinary action against the school principal in Johor who was asked to enter defence in 21 days as required under the regulation for civil servants 1993.

“After receiving written defence, the disciplinary board for group one management of education service will meet and decide on the punishment if the person is found guilty.”

The minister said the government is committed in checking such cases and will act against officers based on existing laws and regulations.

“We can’t act under Section 504 of Penal Code and Internal Security Act as they were due to a slip of the tongue and not meant to incite,” he said to a supplementary question from Wee. — Bernama
