Man gets four months’ jail, whipping for illegal entry

MIRI: An Indonesian man was sentenced to four month’s jail by the Sessions Court in Miri for entering the state illegally.

Judge Awang Kerisnada Awang Mahmud also ordered 23-year-old Angga Acok to be whipped three times.

The accused pleaded guilty to committing the offence under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002), punishable under Section 6(3) of the same Act.

The man from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, was arrested around 10.40pm on Oct 10 by police during a roadblock at Km 96 Miri-Bintulu Road.

He failed to produce a valid travelling document to enter the country.

Further investigation revealed that he entered the state on May 5 last year.

In a separate case, another Indonesian was sentenced to two months’ jail for overstaying in the country.

The accused from South Sulawesi was working as a labourer in an estate prior to his arrest on Oct 10 this year.

Akhbar Salim Abdul Jalil, 29, was charged under Section 15 (1) (c) Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002), punishable under Section 15 (4) of the same Act.

Inspector Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor prosecuted.
