Three athletes to receive incentives totalling RM115,000

Pandalela Rinong

KUCHING: The State government has allocated a total of RM115,000 in incentives for the three athletes from Sarawak who won medals in the recent Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi, India.

Pandalela Rinong, who won a gold and a silver medal in diving, and Bibiana Ng, who won a gold and a bronze medal in shooting, will each receive RM50,000.

While Brian Nickson Lomas will receive RM15,000 for winning two bronze medals in diving.

This monetary incentive is in addition to the amount given out by the Sarawak State Sports Council, Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom said during his DUN winding up speech yesterday.

“We would like to congratulate them for their achievements. They should serve as role models for our youths and aspiring athletes.”

Mawan added that the trio had also been conferred state awards in conjunction with the Head of State’s birthday.

“Their achievements do not go unnoticed by the Sarawak government. We do care for them.”

He said his ministry would continue to develop young talents and prepare the state elite athletes for national and international competitions at the 188 development centres statewide.

He also announced his ministry would be publishing a quarterly tabloid called “Juara” for the sports fraternity and the public.

Sports events and contributions of individuals or sports associations towards sports development, including their involvement and achievements in their own fields, would make up the contents, he said.

The tabloid will be distributed free through appointed channels, targeting mainly sports associations, athletes, fans, selected corporate bodies as well as groups and relevant government agencies.

Mawan said the first issue would be launched at the end of this year.
