January trial for youth accused of murdering father

KUALA TERENGGANU: The High Court here yesterday set Jan 25 to 27 next year for the trial of a youth accused of murdering his father in Kampung Pulau Duyong Besar on Feb 3.

When the case came up for mention yesterday, the court was told that a medical report from Permai Hospital in Johor Baharu found Shahrul Azmi Che Mat, 20, to be recovering and able to attend the trial.

DPP Zalina Awang told Justice Datuk Abd Rahim Muda that the report confirmed that Shahrul Azmi was of unsound mind at the time of the incident.

According to the facts of the case, Shahrul Azmi is alleged to have murdered his father, Che Mat Nik, 51, at their house in the village in Kuala Terengganu at about 2am on that day.

Shahrul Azmi has been charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. — Bernama
