KUCHING: A young woman’s bright-red-dyed hair gave her away after she and a male accomplice were arrested for robbing a group of five teenaged girls along the Kuching Waterfront yesterday.

The two 21-year-olds were detained by a police response team not far from the scene shortly after one of the victims lodged a police report of the 3pm incident.

Prior to the incident, the five 14-year-old girls were having a meal at Sarawak Plaza before heading to a jetty at the Waterfront where they had planned to take a penambang (boat) across Sungai Sarawak.

While waiting, they were approached by a man and two women, with one of them brandishing a paper cutter and threatening to injure the teens if they did not hand over their valuables.

Worried for their safety, the girls surrendered two handphones to the paper cutter-wielding woman, who then vented her displeasure at the meagre spoils by slashing the left thumb one of the girls.

After the suspects fled the scene, three of the girls accompanied the injured victim to the hospital while another headed to the police station and lodged a report.

Based on the complainant’s description that the woman who attacked them had dyed her hair bright red, police were able to easily locate and identify the woman in question, who was with her male accomplice, not far from the Waterfront area.

A body search conducted by police not only produced the two stolen handphones, but also the paper cutter used in the robbery.

Investigations revealed the woman is from Kampung Tabuan while the man is from Rampangi.

The other female suspect, however, was not with the duo and is currently being tracked down. The suspects were detained in the lockup pending further investigation.
