KAPIT: The chairman of SJK(C) Hock Lam’s board of management, Larry Sng said the school must progress in all aspects.

All in joyous mood during the SJK (C) Hock Lam annual prizes cum certificate presentation on Fri evening at civic centre. From left to cut ribbon to make it official Ma Bee Kuan, Teh Hock Hiong, Larry, Kah Kee, Thu Fook, Micky Ngu and Anthony respectively.

“The school must grow in physical building, hardware, software and academic performance. While pupils pursue good school results, there must be holistic all-round education – that is physical, spiritual and emotional – to achieve curricular and co-curricular excellence,” said Sng who is also Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Economic Planning).

“We’re concerned about pupil performance in school and public examinations. We’re serious to look at ways and means to further improve the UPSR results.”

Sng mentioned Hung Mee Yang cash incentives for those achieving excellence in the UPSR to encourage them to study harder.

This year’s 37.04 per cent is a slight improvement from last year’s 36.79 per cent, he pointed out.

There were two straight-A scorers. Mathematics showed a 88 per cent pass and Science 84 per cent but language studies like Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and English only average 50 per cent.

Therefore the school has to look into ways and means to improve pupils’ command of languages.

He was speaking at the SJK(C) Hock Lam annual prizes cum certificate presentation at the civic centre here on Friday evening. It was attended by teachers, the board of management, community leaders and parents who packed the hall.

He urged parents to send their children for tuition classes in the afternoon and school holidays.

“School hours are short and a lot of time, children are at home. Thus, parents must supervise them do homework and revision. Rome was not built overnight. Good result is the accumulation of years of hard work and knowledge.”

He announced a RM20,000 government grant for the school.

Meanwhile donation boxes placed at the entrance raised RM4,680 from parents and teachers attending the function.

At the function Sng handed over school leaving certificates to all Primary 6 pupils.
