‘Gravely ill’ man survives suicide attempt

KUCHING: A middle-aged man, who insisted he was gravely ill despite medical tests showing otherwise, survived a suspected suicide attempt at his house early Saturday.

The 57-year-old from Rubber Road West was found by his wife hanging in the kitchen and bleeding from his wrists around 3am when she woke up to check as he was not in bed. She immediately shouted to her children for help to rescue him and after realising he was still breathing, called for an ambulance to take him to the Sarawak General Hospital.

He was subsequently admitted and was reported to be in stable condition. According to a family member, the victim had recently complained of feeling ‘gravely ill’, but could not provide an explanation as to why he felt that way.

He was brought to the hospital and underwent a battery of tests which showed there was nothing wrong with him. Despite being given a clean bill of health, the man genuinely believed he was very sick and did not appear to be his usual self over the past few days.

In another incident, a teenage girl was also admitted to the hospital in a suspected suicide bid after downing a bottle of bleach yesterday. The 17-year-old, who is due to sit for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination, was found at her aunt’s house in Kampung Semariang Kubur by a cousin shortly after midnight.

The girl, who was groaning in pain and holding a bottle of bleach, was immediately taken to the Sarawak General Hospital and admitted for treatment.

According to a relative, the victim, from Tebakang arrived here last week to visit her aunt prior to sitting for her exams.

The motive behind her action was unclear.
