Third garbage bin centre collapse

KOTA KINABALU: The roof of a garbage bin centre at the Sunny Garden area collapsed yesterday morning.     This is the third garbage centre with a collapsed roof, said Luyang assemblywoman Melanie Chia who visited the scene after being informed of the incident.

“This Sunny Garden bin centre looks so new and it is shocking how it can collapse just like that,” she said.

“Is there some fault in the structural design of the bin centre? Was there approval from the relevant authority for the structure of the bin centre? Or was there a problem with the supervision of the construction?” she asked.

“It is understood that there are 25 bin centres that have been constructed in the Kota Kinabalu City area. It is also understood that no tender was called for this construction and the work was awarded directly to the contractor concerned,” she said.

“Is there any element of corrupt practice here? We ought to know because we are using Kota Kinabalu ratepayers’ money and taxpayers’ money and these monies should be used efficiently and effectively,” said Melanie.

The other two bin centres that collapsed earlier were in Bandaran Berjaya area and Foh Sang.

“It is very fortunate that no one was hurt in today’s (yesterday) collapse. What is the guarantee that future collapse will be casualty free? I hope DBKK (City Hall) will take this seriously to ensure that all projects undertaken are carried out with greater accountability of public funds and also to make sure that projects implemented comply with standard safety requirements,” Melanie said.

“DBKK and the engineer concerned should explain to the people how the roof of the bin centre collapsed. They owe it to the people of the city.”
