PETALING JAYA: Azmin Ali has been elected as deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) while the eldest daughter of party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Nurul Izzah Anwar, was elected as one of the four vice-presidents after receiving the highest number of votes.

The results were announced by PKR permanent chairman Hishamuddin Ismail at the 7th Annual Congress of the party, here yesterday.

Azmin defeated Mustaffa Kamil Ayub by polling 19,543 votes.

However, the number of votes obtained by Mustaffa Kamil was not announced.

For the vice-presidency, Nurul Izzah polled 13,211 votes to occupy the top slot for the post.

The three other posts of vice-president were won by PKR Strategic Director Tian Chua (11,744), PKR Election Director Fuziah Salleh (8,927) and Penang Deputy Chief Minister, who was also the former political secretary to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Dr Mansor Othman (8,576).

For the 20 seats in the Central Leadership Council (MPP), Wanita PKR information head and Selangor Executive Councillor Elizabeth Wong won with the highest votes of 10,897 followed by incumbent Dr Badrul Amin Baharon (9,672), Hee Loy Sian (8,473), Khalid Jaafar (7,889) and Datuk Johari Abdul (7,719). — Bernama

Three members of the Supreme Council — Dr Xavier Jayakumar, N. Gobalakrishnan and Yahya Sahri — failed to defend their seats in the election this time.

The party elections began in September at the divisional level while the elections for the Supreme Leadership Council began on Oct 29.

However, the elections were marred by incidents reported in several divisions and allegations of irregularities while the number of voters in several divisions was very small.

Incumbent deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali did not stand for re-election while president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail won unopposed.

For the post of PKR Wanita chief, incumbent Zuraida Kamaruddin retained her post by beating challengers Dr Suraya Sudin and Animah Ferrar.

Keadilan Youth (AMK) chief Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, also retained his post by defeating Central Leadership Council member Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

Meanwhile, Mohamed Azmin said he won the post because he was elected by the members and not because of the influence of de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He denied that he received Anwar’s support since he was nominated for the post.

He told a media conference at the conclusion of the congress that 30,000 party members cast their votes during the central election which ended last week.

He said the members looked at the record of the candidates such as himself who had been with the party for more than a decade.

“Anwar favours anyone who is loyal to the party.

Certainly you don’t want to question my loyalty,” he said. — Bernama
