Assistant Minister of Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin said they should form their respective teams of volunteers to respond to any emergency.

He said they must know what to do if there was a need for evacuation, and they must also be able to find out how many of their people were affected and who they were.

They should be the ones to alert the relevant authorities and arrange with their village security and development committees (JKKKs) to form their voluntary teams.

“The teams would help a lot during emergencies and disasters. There is a need to form one in each village or longhouse,” said Lee.

The team could help by informing the relevant authorities to get immediate help and other assistance.

Lee made the call when officiating at the closing ceremony of `2010 Disaster Management Talk’ at Eastwood valley Golf and Country Club here.

It was organised by the Briged Kebajikan Perdana (BKP) Miri under the patronage of Miri Welfare Department.

It was targeted at community chiefs and firemen in the division to equip them with the necessary skills to manage disasters.

Fifty pemanca, temenggong, kapitan, tuai rumah, and members of BKP attended the one-day course. They received a certificate each upon completion of the course.

Lee hoped the participants would use and share their knowledge wisely.

“This is very important as a pre-emptive measure,” he said.

He commended the organisers for having organised the course, and hoped there would be more similar courses in future.

Lee also suggested to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) to organise courses on fire prevention.

Miri Divisional assistant director, Goh Yong Kiet, was among those present at the closing ceremony of the course.
