KUCHING: Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman yesterday said that he had yet to receive facts that proved that the state’s Islamic law were the main reason for the increase in the number of divorce cases.

“They said that they would come up with the facts to back their claim but I have yet to receive any. I am not sure when,” said Daud to reporters after attending an event in Tupong yesterday.

Daud added that the facts to be forwarded should back the claim.

He said that the current Islamic law on marriage and divorce was thorough and covered all important areas.

“However, if Mapim thinks that there are certain areas that can be improved, do tell us so that we can work on it for the betterment of the people,” he said.

“We are actually sad to see an increase in the number of divorce cases in the state. Last year alone there were around 500 couples who filed for divorce from around 2,000 who registered their marriages,” said Daud.

He pointed that the increase was due to a lot of factors and should not be blamed on the law.

According to him, most of the divorce cases were due to lack of mutual understanding and abuse, and many couples tied the knot at an early age.

On another matter, he said the government could stop any divorce but could work on improving the curricular for marriage courses and counselling.

“We can improve the counselling modules, but it will definitely need those who underwent the courses to fully understand what was delivered,” he said.

Mimbar Permuafakatan Ibu Bapa Malaysia (Mapim) president, Wan Zain Syed Mohdzar, recently said that there was a weakness in the implementation of the Islamic law and procedures in the state.
