KENINGAU: Self-employed James Tay, 55, became a proud hero when he donated blood for the 100th time in his life during a campaign organised by the Keningau Taoist Tap Pak Kong Association with the cooperation of the Blood Transfusion unit of Keningau Hospital recently.

For this unselfish act of devotion towards society, James was awarded with prizes worth RM10,000 by the organisers.

“I will continue to donate blood for at least 30 more times if I am allowed to,” James said.

James recalled that he first donated blood at the age of 17 when he saw his sister in a hospital bed fighting for her life while giving birth to her baby. That one pint of blood had saved his sister’s life as well as that of the baby’s.

His sister remains his inspiration and he donated without expecting anything in return. James made a point by urging the members of the public to donate blood.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the Keningau Taoist Tap Pak Kong Association, Foo Cheong Man said since the campaign was started by the association in May 2004, a total of 2,574 pints of blood had been collected. The most recent campaign netted 234 pints.

According to Foo, the campaign will be continued next year.
