KOTA KINABALU: A fair featuring Vietnamese handmade silk lanterns and Chinese New Year decorations is held for the first time in Sabah at Asia City, commencing yesterday until Dec 13.

The charity fair is organised by the Lions Club of Kota Kinabalu Asia City in cooperation with AS Bookstore Sdn Bhd.

Timothy Ang, who operates a stall selling the Vietnamese lanterns at the fair, said Vietnamese silk lanterns have had more than 60 years of history and the lanterns had been handmade using bamboo as their frames.

His stall which also sells numerous Chinese New Year decorations, will be donating 20 per cent of the profit to Bukit Harapan.

Ang said there are four colours available for each of the different sizes of the Vietnamese lanterns.  The prices range from RM58 to RM188 depending on the size, adding that more products for sale will be added to the stall.

The organisers also announced that a lantern making competition will be held for children under the age of 15 on December 19 from 11 am to 1 pm.  Participants are required to bring their own materials for the competition.  The winners will receive prizes in the form of Vietnamese silk lanterns.  Three consolation prizes will also be given.

Application forms and further details about the competition are obtainable from the Asia City information counter.
