113 students complete skills programme with Yahos

KUCHING: A total of 113 students from 12 different ethnic groups from all over Sarawak graduated with their Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) from Yahos Sdn Bhd (Yahos) at MJC Batu Kawah yesterday.

Sixty three students had graduated from Automation Technician, Mechatronic Level Two course, while the other 50 students in the Child Care Provider, Level Two course.

The 12 ethnic groups are Beketan, Berawan, Kayan, Kelabit, Kenyah, Kiput, Lahanan, Lunbawang, Murut, Penan, Punan and Sekapan.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Datin Fatimah Abdullah attended the graduation ceremony and presented graduation certificates to all 113 students.

Accompanying Fatimah at the graduation ceremony was Yahos Sdn Bhd managing director Natasha Nasa Douglas Uggah.

“I am very happy and pleased for all of these 113 graduated students and I am definitely felt very proud for them. I would want to see more of ethnic students here in Sarawak to succeed in both academically and technically,” she said.

According to her, more trained and skilful people are needed as Sarawak aspires to be a fully developed state by 2020.

“I encourage all of the 113 graduated students to go deeper and to further their studies and training. Let’s not put it to a stop. Go higher and achieve higher as long as we are able to do so,” Fatimah said.

Meanwhile, an Automation Technician student Harley Rick Wen,18, from Ulu Tinjar, Miri said that he is very thankful to have been given the chance to further his studies in Yahos after completing his form five.

Recently graduated Penan student, Harley said that he plans to pursue further in his education, specialising in Mechatronic.

“I am planning to further my studies here in Yahos. But there will only be 25 selected students are able to enter the Mechatronic Level Three course. If I am not one of the 25 students, then I plan to further my studies in Miri, also majoring in Mechatronic,” he said.

Yahos Sdn Bhd is currently offering three major courses namely; Automation Technician, Computer Networking Technician and Childcare Provider.

Beautician and Aesthetician (level one and two) and Culinary (level one and two) courses will be Yahos’ new programmes in 2011.

Yahos is one of the training providers appointed by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), under the Prime Minister’s Department, via the State Planning Unit (SPU), under the Chief Minister’s Department of Sarawak to train students from the minority ethnic group of Sarawak, skill-based, SKM training programmes accredited by the Department of Skills Development.

This programme is funded by EPU and monitored by SPU. Nevertheless, Yahos has always believed that skills-based training would better equip students to meet the ever-changing demands of industries.
