Cook faces 14 years’ jail, rotan if convicted of armed robbery

KOTA KINABALU: A local cook whose trial was set for March 7-8 is facing a maximum 14 years’ jail and whipping if found guilty of  armed robbery early this month.

Mohd Zulkhairul Nizam, 20, pleaded not guilty before deputy registrar of the High Court Marlina Ibrahim to robbing a 30-year-old woman of two cellphones, a gold necklace and makeup items near a quarters’ area in Likas at 3.15am on Dec 4.

The accused,, who is charged under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code, was armed with a knife during the alleged robbery.

The indictment carries a maximum 14 years’ jail with a fine or whipping, on conviction.

Marlina, who sat as a Sessions Court judge, ordered Mohd Zulkhairul to be released on RM5,000 bail, with RM2,000 deposited with two local sureties, pending his trial.

Prosecuting officer ASP Sabrina Jinius will be calling five witnesses to testify against the accused.

In the Magistrate’s Court, local Taat Omar, 50, was jailed for 45 days for damaging a hut belonging to a company three months ago.

The accused pleaded guilty before magistrate Herlina Muse to committing mischief by damaging the hut at a car park near a market here on Sept 29.

The offence under Section 435 of the Penal Code is punishable by a maximum seven years’ jail and a fine, on conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Chow Siang Kong prosecuted the case.
