Developer receives PhD and award at age 80

MIRI: Local property developer Dato Lau Siu Wai, at the age of 80, has earned himself and the country prestigious world honour and award.

The most recent honour conferred to him on Dec 4 was the Doctor of Philosophy in Project Management from the InterAmerican University

On Sept 25, Lau received the ‘Top Ten World Outstanding Examples of Chinese Entrepreneur’ by the standing committee of China International Economic and Technical Cooperation Forum & The Round-table Conference for Chinese and Foreign Outstanding CEO and Entrepreneur.

Lau, who is the executive chairman of the Miri Housing Development Realty Sdn Bhd, said he was very happy and honoured to receive the honour and award that recognised his dedication and outstanding performance in project management and for writing a book.

“I am very honoured to receive the PhD and the award. This shows that we Malaysians can be on par with our international counterparts,” Lau told the Borneo Post yesterday.

For the PhD, Lau topped the list of 129 people who received their scrolls from the president of the InterAmerican University, Dr Angel L Fernandez during the 2010 Winter Commencement International Convocation held at University Kebangsaan Malaysia.

As for award on the ‘Top Ten World Outstanding Examples of Chinese Entrepreneur’   Lau said he was the only one from Malaysia while a few others were from the US and UK.

The Miri housing group owns and operates numerous properties in the city.

Among them were the Bintang Megamall, Meritz Hotel, Senadin shophouses and bungalows and the newly built Senadin Water Theme Park.

The housing and shopping projects are Merbau Estate, Piasau Garden, Hill Top and Lai Pau Gardens, King’s Park commercial centre, and Piasau Shell camp.

In addition, the Miri Housing Group of Companies had contributed to Sarawak’s infrastructure development through the construction of offices, factories, schools, universities and colleges particularly in and around Miri.

In education, Lau has made extensive contribution through his pioneering initiatives in setting up a private secondary school and successfully persuading Curtin University of Technology to set up an offshore campus in Miri.

Currently, he lectures English for Han Shan University in China.

Lau is also active in many community projects.
