SANDAKAN: Kedai Kopi and Bar Lock Yuen, which opened its family-type business (parents-sons) in 1973, set up a new coffee shop at Sandy Plain,  opposite Ocean King Seafood Restaurant, here recently.

Kedai Kopi and Bar Lock Yuen has been well-known for its home-made cakes here.

“We started as a sundry shop back in the Usno era at Kg Air, Karamunting in the 1960s. We bought this shop in 1972.

“Business then was slow as the population was small. Then the business picked up fast in the 1980s,” recalled Tan Yu Lai, the owner of Lock Yuen.

He said the shop was crowded during breakfast at 10am and tea-break at 3pm.

Meanwhile, junior Tan explained that an egg can bake two egg-tarts.

Most of the coffee shop’s customers come from Tanah Merah, Karamunting, Bandar Ramai-Ramai and Bandar Leila.

The coffee shop is famous for its egg-tarts and tapioca cakes accompanied by roti-panggang.

Tan said that his regular customers came from the nearby workshops and staff of Sabah Electricity Board.

Prominent businessman Dato’ Richard Koh, William Soo comes daily at 10am to discuss political issues, business opportunities and other new happenings in town, with their friends, he said.
