Former dockyard worker charged with having drugs

KUCHING: A 28-year-old former dockyard worker charged with possessing dangerous drugs appeared in the magistrates’ court yesterday.

Chong Joon Hong, who was defended by counsel Shankar Ram, appeared before magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng who fixed Feb 7 for further mention.

No plea was recorded and the accused ordered to be further detained in police custody. Chong allegedly possessed 4372.4g cannabis and 190.04g ketamine.

Both offences fall under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 which carries the death penalty if found guilty.

He was also charged under Section 12(2) of the same act for possessing 528 Ecstacy pills and 1,340 Erimin 5 pills.

He could be fined not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding five years or both.

He allegedly committed the offence at a house in Batu Kawa on Aug 15 around 12.30pm.

The drugs were said to be found in the suspect’s bedroom during a raid mounted by a police party.

In Kuala Lumpur, the High Court yesterday called for the defence of four foreign nationals on a charge of trafficking in drugs two years ago.

Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha set Feb 22 and 23 for the hearing after deciding that the prosecution had made out a prima facie case against Pakistani national Naseem Haider, 38, Indian national Sunita, 29, and two Indonesian nationals Surya Darma Putra, 40, and Maharani, 29.

The four of them were accused of trafficking in 1,170.9 grams of heroin and 198.35 grams of monoacetylmorphine at a room at Lanson Place, Jalan Ampang Hilir, Cheras, at 10.30pm on June 19 last year.
