Foreigner to hang for trafficking

SHAH ALAM: An Indian national was sentenced to death by the High Court here yesterday after he was found guilty of trafficking in 4.04 kg of ketamine at the KL International Airport (KLIA), Sepang, near here, more than two years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Siti Khadijah Sheikh Hassan Badjenid passed the sentence after she was satisfied that the accused, Najmudeen Abdul Kader, 27, had failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.

The accused was alleged to have committed the offence at the Passenger Inspection Counter, International Arrival Hall, KLIA at about 8.20am on Aug 8, 2008.

He was charged under Section 39 B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and sentenced under Section 39 B(2) of the same act which provided for the mandatory death sentence.

During the trial, six prosecution witnesses were called up to give evidence while the defence produced one witness.

Deputy public prosecutor from the Royal Malaysian Customs, Naziah Mokhtar appeared for the prosecution while Najmudeen was represented by counsel, Sreekant Pillai. — Bernama
