KUCHING: Eighty-one village security and development committees (JKKKs) around Kuching received a total of RM40,500 in grants yesterday.

Samariang assemblywoman Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali presented grants of RM500 to each JKKK.

She called on all JKKKs to maintain close relationships with the District Office and elected representatives of their respective areas.

“Village chiefs and JKKKs should understand the importance of good relations with the authorities. Elected representatives need their feedback, which is an especially vital source to look into the problems of the people from the village,” she said.

Apart from holding meetings to discuss important issues concerning the villagers and organising activities, Sharifah Hasidah said, JKKKs should not forget to submit annual reports to the District Office.

“The report is vital to enable the District Office to evaluate each JKKK and to justify the annual allocation to them,” she said. She called on JKKKs and community leaders to support the government’s development plans and agenda.

“By having this connection, it will be easier for the government to perform its duties. Collaboration can lead to better understanding of community issues or problems.”

Meanwhile, Kuching District Officer Mahli Sepawie said the annual grant is only applicable to active JKKKs under specific terms and conditions.

He said JKKKs must submit annual reports of their activities to qualify.
