Melaka cyclist shines at Subis challenge

MIRI: The sole participant from Melaka Mohd Sayuti Zahit emerged champion in the Road Race category of the inaugural Subis Cycling Challenge Championship 2011 held yesterday at Bekenu town.

Sayuti, 26, a cycling coach from Universiti Teknikal Melaka clocked 1:57:26.236 to beat his closest contender Mohd Imaadi Abang Azia from Brunei who completed the 90km race within 1:57:26:239.

Sayuti received RM1,500 cash and medal while Imaadi walked away with RM1,000 and medal.

Third placing went to Brunei’s Abdul Hadrie and he received RM500 and medal while his two other teammates, Md Rafiuddin Zikara and Mod Rukhzaidin Ahmad finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Both of them received RM200 while the sixth and seventh placing winners respectively, Jeoffery Jerry Jemie and Mohd Suhaizan Rayi both from Sabah received RM50 each.

Brunei team who won the most prizes in the top seven placings emerged the overall champion and they received a plaque.

Riang Moksin from Miri only managed to capture the ninth spot with a time of 1:57:54:879 while the next best participant from Sarawak, Addy Amin Shahriman the Majlis Sukan Negeri Sarawak cyclist only managed 11th placing.

Sibuti member of parliament Ahmad Lai Bujang, who was the Patron 1 of the championship, and the Deputy Resident of Miri Division Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf gave away the prizes.

Sukma team won all the top four placings in girls category and the top five placings in the boys category.

The champion in the girls category is Nur Azrenna, second – Aina Zafirah, third – Rosnina Minggu and fourth – Carleen Wang. Awang Addin emerged champion in the boys category while his brother, Awang Adib came second, third was Nizam Vate, fourth – Mohd Fitri and fifth – Wong Tuck Meng.

The champion received RM100 cash and medal while the second and third place winners received RM50 and RM30 respectively.

The fourth and third place winners received RM20. Among those present were Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus, the co-advisor and Director of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) Francis Nyurang Ding and Miri District Officer Boniface Intang Apat, the organising chairman.

The open Road Race from Bekenu to Batu Niah and back to Bekenu was one of the three categories competed in the Subis Cycling Challenge Championship. The championship, which attracted 63 cyclists from Brunei, Sabah, Semenanjung Malaysia, and Sarawak was jointly organised by Miri District Office with the Subis District Council, MSNS and the Sarawak Extreme Cycling Club with sponsorship from among others Edaran Tan Chong Motor and Station Petronas Mosjaya.

It was to promote cycling as a competitive sport and to scout talents especially among local cyclists to represent the state in future competitions, and to promote Sibuti as an ideal venue for extreme sports.

It is also in line with the efforts to make Miri Division as a sports powerhouse in the state.
