KUCHING: AmBank Taylor Engineering Fair January 2011 showcased 54 innovative and practical inventions at Taylor’s University Malaysia for two consecutive days and concluded yesterday.

Organised by the Taylor’s School of Engineering (SOE) and the Society of Engineering and Technology (SET), the fair highlighted projects by semester one and two engineering students.

As the official sponsor and co-endorser of the event, the deposits and customer solutions division of AmBank (M) Bhd (AmBank) sponsored seven awards to celebrate the outstanding semester project of students from the engineering school.

This year’s interesting project include Aqua Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) – a robot that submerges into the water specifically for marine life observation, fixing and installing pipes. The second project was the Chem-E Car – free of pollution, energy efficient car which relies only on safe chemical reactions.

Other highlights of the fair were the green technology, solar powered house, solar car, mini electrical vehicle, solar boat, further developed synthetic jet as a bioreactor and red bull Taylor’s racing car.

“By encouraging them to be innovative, students will better understand the design process to create new inventions that can add value, learn how to turn their ideas into reality and are able to present their ideas to visitors of the fair. In the process, they also develop leadership qualities and become more capable in dealing and managing problems and challenges,” said SOE dean Al-Atabi Mushtak.

He added that Taylor’s SOE undergraduate students who were exposed to projects and research work were well received by the industry as they are not just well trained in their specific engineering disciplines but also possess practical skills, soft skills and displays good personal traits.

“In the future, Taylor’s SOE would like to invite engineering students and industry people nationwide to come over and witness the ability and creativity of our students. I believe at Taylor’s, we take pride in producing quality engineers who are well-equipped with practical and hands-on abilities,” Mushtak concluded.

Emphasising on project based learning for students to adapt theories into practice, the engineering fair recognised and rewarded students who excelled in their project work by giving away certificates and cash prize awards for 13 categories.

AmBank branch banking general manager Mohamad Sabirin said, “We are not just a business partner but we want to contribute to the sustainable growth of the community within which we operate.

“We have started operations of our new branch on campus to make banking convenient amongst both students and staff.”
