KUCHING: National independent badminton player Pei Wee Chung starts his bid to move up the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings in the Korea Open Super Series Premier in Seoul from Jan 25 to 30.

AIMING FOR TOP 50: Pei will start the new season at the Korean Open Super Series Premier next week.

“My first round match will be against China’s number five Wang Zheng Min. It’s going be tough but I will try to beat him,” he said yesterday.

Pei added that the tournament was his first for the year and he needed more competition to improve his match fitness.

“I’m training six days a week — three hours in the morning and two in the afternoon.”

On Wednesday and Friday he will train with Nusa Mashuri assistant coach Dony in Kelana Jaya and on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday with former national player Mohd Hashim in Klang.

On every Thursday, Pei will train with the national team in Bukit Jalil.

The 37-year-old from Siniawan, Kuching, is aiming to reach the top 50 by the end of the year.

He dropped many ranking points last year after failing to win crucial matches in some tournaments due to lapse of concentration.

Pei, currently ranked 198, aims to play between 10 to 15 tournaments this year to improve his rankings and qualify for the All England Championship.
