MIRI: Central or Open Air Market and Unity Food Centre are a hit among tourists and visitors in Miri.

“They are patronised and popular not only among locals but tourists and visitors to Miri,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan after a walkabout in both markets yesterday.

“They are doing very well, especially food stalls. They have to improve the quality and standard of the environment and food and drinks sold,” said Dr Chan.

Dr Chan who is also Minister of Tourism and Heritage Sarawak reminded traders and hawkers to emphasise cleanliness and hygiene.

Meanwhile, Central/Open Air Market is to undergo a major facelift after the Chinese New Year.

The market will be closed for at least a month for upgrading and renovation.

On the possibility of the market being relocated, Dr Chan said: “It would remain there for at least a few years. We have asked Miri City Council to upgrade and improve it a little bit so it would be more clean and organised.”

Earlier, Dr Chan did a walkabout at Central Market and Unity Food Centre, extending Chinese New Year greeting to traders, hawkers and customers.

He was joined by Infrastructure Development and Communication  Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia, Mayor Lawrence Lai and Datuk Sebastian Ting.
