SMC mulls bicycle lanes along major roads in municipality

SIBU: Cyclists here may enjoy lanes demarcated specifically for them along major roads.

A proposal to have bicycle lanes created was made at the monthly meeting of Sibu Municipal Council yesterday.

Chairman of the Works and Traffic standing committee, Robert Lau Hui Yew, who proposed it said a feasibility study was needed first.

He said the council would collect feedback from the public and source for funds from the government.

“Whether or not we could get the funds, we have to wait for the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (11MP); meaning it would take another five to 10 years to implement,” he said. But if there was ready fund, the council would do a pilot project.

According to Lau, the great number of roadside ditches would facilitate the building of bicycle lanes.

“Once the drainage has been upgraded, we just need more funds to construct the lanes over the ditches,” he explained.
