LABIS: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has described as absurd and most saddening allegations that policemen had removed flags of political parties contesting in the Tenang state by-election.

“The responsibility of the police is to ensure a smooth by-election campaign and polling. Don’t tell me they want to go around tearing down flags. It does not make sense,” he told reporters after calling on Alias Bujal, 94, a former Umno leader and freedom fighter, in Kampung Tenang here.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff on Tuesday dismissed the allegations.

Hishammuddin, who is an Umno vice-president, said the police had stationed their personnel in tents at strategic places in the constituency to maintain security and ensure a smooth campaign.

He said it was most saddening that certain quarters hurled accusations at the police in their attempt purely to garner the support of the people and their votes. — Bernama
