KUDAT: A local man was reported missing and feared drowned after the boat he and five others were in capsized near Kalutan Island here yesterday.

Osman Musu, 60, from Kampung Landung Ayang, was reported missing in the 4.30am tragedy.

The survivors are Ismail Harun, 50; Sabulan Asali, 21; Jali Asali, 19; and brothers Asli Potot, 18, and Basli, 20.

District police chief DSP Dawi Ossen said the boat capsized after it was hit by strong waves near Kalutan Island.

“Initial investigation shows that the survivors swam to Kalutan Bay before they were found by villagers around 9am.

“However, one of the victims is still reported missing,” he said when contacted yesterday.

According to Dawi, all the victims were in the 18-metre wooden fishing boat when the incident happened.

The Marine Operation Force (MOF) launched a search for the missing man. It was called off later yesterday due to strong current and big waves as high as five metres, said Dawi.

He advised the public not to go out fishing at the moment due to the rough sea conditions.

“Be careful when going out to sea during bad weather and always wear life jacket to avoid unwanted incident,” he said.
