You deserve to be rewarded

WHAT do you do after a day’s work? Do you celebrate your daily success? Do you unwind after you work hard each day?

I suggest you do all that.

Make it a point to treat yourself well by doing little things you love, like swimming or watching a movie, hanging out with friends, or just something that makes you smile or laugh.

Remember too that as we grow older, we begin to work longer hours, often neglecting the child in us.

That’s really not good for healthy living because we will then tend to get tired of doing a lot of things. When that happens we become ‘bored’ people. So as not to come to that stage, I would like to suggest that you give yourself a reward no matter how small it is so that it will get you ready for the next day’s work.

In life, we must constantly work and play, the makeup of these two ingredients is the secret to any great achievement. If we have to decide on the duration of play, I would like to suggest that we work, work and play.It means that if we work for eight hours, then play should be for a good four hours. This is just my formula, which to me is fair because after eight hours of hard work, the next four hours should be or us to do what we would love to do – meet up with friends, play golf, walk in the park, or drive out with the family…anything that takes our mind off our work.

Remember, if you hardly play but just work, not only your productivity will go down, what you do also will be of little creativity. So work hard and play hard. When you work, work like you own the company or the organisation; when you play, play like a child who never plays enough.

So we come to the next question: What do you do to feel highly charged? Lots of people do different things. There is no right answer but a thousand choices. What is important is what we can do is do the things that will empower us to be better at work.

I know a couple who work hard daily and then go for holidays three to four times a year. And when they come back, they will work like crazy again. This formula works for them.

Another couple would have six overseas holidays in a year and they too work very hard. And there is this multimillionaire lady I know who goes holidaying six months in a year but only gives seminars a few times in a year. This lady has the money and time to live a queen’s life.Dear readers, you design what works for you.The principle is, work hard and play hard. The top 5 per cent work and play and their lives are quite balanced. The bottom 95 per cent works half-heartedly and either plays half-heartedly or over play.

For the last six years that I spent working in Kuala Lumpur, I must admit my life was off tangent.I was always working or thinking about my work.I worked in the day, and at night I had nightmares about work in my sleep. My life became so unfulfilling till I had no time for anyone else except my work and worries.I was sick and tired of everything and made a decision to re-structure every aspect of my life.I found out that I was over-working myself and was losing a big chunk of other areas in my life. Now, I must say I have a balanced life. I have time for work, play, exercise, movies, dates, sleep and reading.I have also learned to use technology to replace me and I train my staff to do what I used to do.Leveraging on technology, right talents, others’ time and right contacts can make your life easier.

Work hard but most importantly, work smart by using the proven ways to get many people to help you. A smart boss will have many people working together with him and he will still earn more money compared to someone who works on his own.

Never work alone; always work in a team.

Be a good team contributor, others will surely play their part too.Play hard and create system to replace you.One boss told me, he is free most of the time because he has created a system to do most of the things used to be done by him.Now he has other people and technology to work for him.

Everyone should learn to aim for freedom by learning better ways of doing things – internet, especially facebook, youtube and twitter, are great things that can come handy to the modern bosses. Life is certainly easier this century than say 20 years ago because of technology.

The other thing that I want to share with you is that those who fail to plan, plan to fail. The reason is play and work requires planning too. Play without planning can be stressful and a waste of time.If work requires planning, it also means that play must be planned too.

One again, make time for work, business and study; make time to celebrate your success by rewarding yourself. If you can do that, there is no reason why you cannot live a balanced lifestyle.Remember, life is short.Live to the fullest by playing everyday after work or study. Bring that smile back to your life and the life of those who matter to you.If you can do that, you are a happy man.You are successful.
