Monthly household waste disposal proposed

KOTA KINABALU: City Hall has been urged to arrange a monthly one-day household waste disposal plan so that house owners can have an easier way and means to dispose off their accumulated unwanted items.

These items usually are not under the garbage disposal list of the City Hall, and they include broken furniture, tree branches, spoiled electrical appliances and other bigger items.

Kota Kinabalu member of parliament Hiew King Cheu made the suggestion yesterday after going round the Kota Kinabalu city with Sabah DAP vice chairman Edward Ewol Mujie on a routine inspection on the cleanliness of the city.

They noticed many places in the city were having piles of household waste being dumped in front of shops and houses.

According to Hiew, the house owners and city dwellers always find it a headache and expensive to hire someone to dispose of and carry away these unwanted material from their houses in the apartments and housing estates. These items are dumped in front of the houses and made the area untidy and dirty.

Sometimes these waste items are being thrown all over the place indiscriminately by the people.

At the moment, City Hall only collects the household waste from the dustbins placed in front of the houses, and any leaves, tree branches and even broken furniture are not being collected by the garbage trucks.

Hiew said it is high time for City Hall to arrange to send their lorry to clear these larger items on a one-day monthly basis.

The waste collection system in other countries has improved long time ago, and they have separate bins for different type of household waste. They also have monthly fixed dates for the disposal of large household unwanted items.

This is the type of service that we are waiting for in the Kota Kinabalu City, said Hiew.
