SONG: There is still a glimpse of hope and opportunity for people who want to do business in Song.

CAFE BUSINESS: Roslan (left), his wife Sofia (centre) and their assistant at the cafe in Song Public Wharf.

For Roslan Ahmad and his wife Sofia Kong Abdullah, opening up a cafe here was the opportunity they could not refuse as both were business minded and wanted to do their own catering business.

The couple operates the halal cafe situated on the Song Public Wharf, serving food and beverages for passengers and the general public.

The cafe is very unique as it gives patrons a commanding view of the mighty Rajang River while ordering or enjoying tasty local halal dishes like
Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Beef Noodles, Mee Jawa and local cakes.

Roslan told The Borneo Post Adventure Team (BAT) that he had a two-year contract to operate the cafe.

“My wife Sofia is a good cook and is from Song while I was in the hospitality industry for many years and these blend well with our plans to do it here,” he added.

According to Sofia, business is good as passengers usually eat and drink at their cafe before departing Song to their destinations.

She told BAT they only close once a week as there are more customers during weekends and at the end of the month.

Despite the fact that the business is good, they have to leave their two school going children in Kuching at their home at 10th Mile, where they are taken care of by Sofia’s mother.

The cafe opens from 5.30am to 5pm after the last express boat departs Song to its final destination to Sibu or Kapit.
