SIBU: The Puteri wing of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) is tasked to tackle issues among the young voters in its role to assist the main body in the coming state election.

SPDP Puteri chief Councillor Barbara William Mawan said young voters had more issues as compared to the older ones.

She noted that young voters also had different voting trend.

“They are very unpredictable and their minds are volatile which I believe we really have to take good care of because they are a very crucial element of the generation.

“We really have to take care of them in a very delicate manner,” she said when met during the ‘Barisan Nasional Unity Night’ held at Pakan community hall in Pakan, recently.

Given the task, Barbara said with current Puteri’s strength of about 8,000 members aged 21 and above, they hoped to tackle issues concerning those of their age.

“When we have Puteri, we are actually aiming to have a platform for the younger generations particularly to find out issues, in terms of social, welfare, political as well as economic that they feel they would like to fight for.

“SPDP Puteri is their platform to raise relevant issues,” she reiterated.

And Puteri is going to use social networking on the Internet as one way to reach to the voters, she said.

The new medium, she said, was the preferred channel of young voters.

“Of course we have to be very much up-to-date because that is their preferred channel.

“But then again at the fact that we are a rural based party, it is not that easy as much as we would like to try use the Internet as medium.

“We still have to reach them out (field work) mostly because some of them are staying in longhouse,” she said.

Meanwhile, under the current seat arrangement, SPDP has eight seats out of the 71, while Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) has 35 seats, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) has 19 and Parti Rakyat Sarawak(PRS), nine.
