MIRI: The government will continue to implement various strategies to
solve squatters’ problems especially in Miri to ensure orderly development of its city.

Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia said among the efforts taken were resettling them in areas where proper amenities such as electricity and water supply could be provided.

“It has always been the government’s desire including mine as elected representative to ensure that the people enjoy at least basic amenities.”

“We are continuously finding ways and means to solve squatter problems, and not doing it when general election is approaching,” said Andy to The Borneo Post after visiting the Land and Survey Department here yesterday.

On his visit, Andy said it was to get first hand information on the various land issues including land lease and premium as well as the resettlement programmes particularly involving his constituents.

During the visit, Andy was briefed on the progress of the seven families affected by the development of the Pujut 7 second bridge project, where they will be resettled to Tudan Phase 6.

He was briefed by Superintendent of the Land and Survey Department Miri, Rozlan Putit.

Meanwhile, Rozlan said the department had successfully made available a total of 3,045 housing lots in resettlement schemes in Tudan, Piasau Utura and Marudi in the last five years.

The bulk of it was in Miri particularly in Tudan while 400 lots were in Marudi and the rest in Piasau Utara.

All of the lots in Tudan Phase I, II, III, IV, and in Piasau Utara and Marudi Phase I had been taken up while the remaining 372 (including 3 at Tudan Phase IIA, 68 – Tudan Phase V, 284 at Tudan Phase VI, 16 – Piasau Utara Extension and one at Marudi Phase II) are still awaiting approval.

Currently Miri and Marudi still have 4.061 squatters and they are urged to apply for emplacement at future resettlement schemes.

However only genuine squatters will be considered and application forms are obtainable from the office of the Land and Survey Department Miri as Wisma Pelita.
