Association seeks land from state government to build new office building

KUCHING: The Sarawak Government Pensioners Association (PPKS) is attempting to get land from the state government to build a new office building.

The association’s 10-year agreement with the government to occupy the building at Jalan Resevoir here will expire next year.

“We have been pursuing this matter at length for the past eight years. We will highlight this matter again at our next annual general meeting,” PPKS president Saidi Wahie told a press conference yesterday.

He added that the association, entering its 40th year, was also in need of more funds.

“The government’s grant for the association each year is quite low so we have to find more initiatives to raise funds. This lack of funds would disrupt many programmes and activities that PPKS has in store for its members. Our programmes try to help pensioners adapt to retiree life while keeping them occupied with various activities,” he explained.

On another note, Saidi commended Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg’s recent proposal of setting up a retiree housing area similar to the Retiree Park in Adelaide. Australia.

“Once we have more details on this project, we will help to announce and advertise it to all our members. PPKS very much welcomes this idea as, in general, retirees prefer a neighbourhood with peace and quiet with all available facilities, but located a bit far from the busy city life.”

“This scheme is regarded very important and we support it fully.”
