KOTA KINABALU: City Hall has requested for funding from the Housing and Local Government Ministry to upgrade and repair the dilapidated facilities at the Prince Phillip park in Tanjung Aru.

Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said since City Hall had been tasked with the responsibility to maintain the park, plans for upgrading have been prepared but have not been able to do so due to financial constraint.

“I hope City Hall’s application for allocation would be given due attention.

“This will be to fund the cost of annual maintenance of the park which had been taken over from the National Landscape department as well as to carry out the planned upgrading.”

“This is to enable us to improve the park,” he said, speaking at the launching of ‘A Day With Rakan Bandaraya’ programme organised at the park Friday.

The Prince Phillip park is popular among locals and visitors from outside Kota Kinabalu who come to picnic at the beach, especially during weekends.

However, the basic facilites in the area including the public toilets and benches are in dire need of urgent upgrading to accomodate the growing number of visitors.

There have been complaints in the past regarding the condition and management of the park.

Visitors had claimed that the public could not even have access to the public rest room to shower after swiming at the beach since it was closed most of the time.
