KUCHING: Big long-term plans are afoot for Demak Laut constituency which include the construction of a RM72.5 million road connecting Samarahan and Demak.

It will have two bridges – one big and one small – covering Kampung Binyor behind Kampung Pinggan Jaya and Kampung Pinggan Muhibbah.

There are also plans to set up a second new township in Demak but the exact location is yet to be decided.

“We have long-term plans for Demak Laut area until year 2030. The area will specialise in high technology electronic industry,” said Demak Laut incumbent Datuk Dr Abang Abdul Rauf Abang Zen.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) company MEMC had set up its plant costing close to US$1 billion in the Free Trade Zone in Demak.

The company specialises in making solar panels from silica sand.

Dr Rauf who is also Assistant Industrial Development Minister suggested that a marina be built opposite the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching to complement the tourism industry.

He said this at the handover of land titles to Kampung Selabat, Muara Tebas here yesterday.

A total of 33 people received land titles while another 61 are still being processed.

Meanwhile, Dr Rauf said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Demak Laut branch has submitted three names to the party leadership for the upcoming 10th state election on April 16.

“It is up to the Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud to choose and evaluate them.”

In the last 2006 election, Dr Rauf won by a majority of 3,605 votes, beating Saidan@Massudin Sahini of Parti Keadilan Rakyat who garnered 1,489 votes.

Also present at the event yesterday was PBB Demak Laut deputy chief Dr Hazlan Hipni.
