KUALA LUMPUR: All Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) offices nationwide will have Video Interview Rooms (VIR) by year end.

Chief commissioner Datuk Abu Kassim Mohamed said closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and iron grilles will also be installed at building windows.

“The VIRs are equipped with video recorders and cameras to monitor and record witness’ statements and behaviour as well as that of officers during interviews. Presently, they are available at our office in Putrajaya and Perak,” he told reporters after receiving the Complaints Committee Annual Report 2010 at the Anti-Corruption Academy here yesterday.

Abu Kassim said the move was to reveal the truth and fend off accusations from people that MACC forced them to admit guilty during interviews.

The CCTV cameras costing RM4.25mil would be installed along routes in the buildings to control and identify movement of officers and the public.

He said X-ray scanners and metal detectors were also installed at all MACC offices except Johor which would be done soon.

Meanwhile, MACC Complaints Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Abdullah said three officers were sacked for misconduct last year.

“Thirteen were warned, five had their pay suspended while the others were demoted, fined and released.

“They were hauled up for abuse of power, negligence and violating work procedures.”

Mohd Noor said the committee received 54 complaints from the public of which 57 per cent were resolved.

“Three complaints of violence by MACC officers were investigated and found to be baseless,” he added.

He said to enhance security and facilitate public complaints, MACC would be building its own building complex nationwide. — Bernama
