KUCHING: Pelagus incumbent Larry Sng brushed aside speculations that he would be contesting in Meradong under Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) ticket.

“Not that I am aware of. I am not confirmed to contest in any seat nor could I deny that I will contest in the election,” he said after a Rock Era Digi band competition press conference at Masja building yesterday.

On Tuesday, Barisan Nasional (BN) Chief Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud revealed that SUPP would be fielding at least 30 per cent new faces in the election and rumours said that Sng’s name may be in the list.

However, SUPP recently announced that the party had shut the door to the partyless Sng.

Sng, who is also the Assistant Minister of Youth Affairs and Training of Youth, said he would let his fate be decided by top BN leadership over the next few days.

Another rumour also claimed that Sng was eyeing the Meluan seat as his father Datuk Sng Chee Hua had previously served the Julau parliamentary constituency. Meluan and Pakan are both under Julau parliamentary constituency.

Sng meanwhile assured that he would continue to serve Pelagus as he never stopped doing so since he was first elected as the state assemblyman in 2001.

“My service to the people in Pelagus is unwavering. It has not stopped since 2001 and I am planning trips to go back to Pelagus. As for the people of Pelagus, I assure them of my continuous service and that is my commitment to them,” he added.

Sng won Pelagus seat in 2006, defeating Sarawak National Party (SNAP) Simon Sibat and independent Jeffery Nuing Ibom with a majority of 3239 votes. In 2001, he won a four cornered fight, defeating independent candidates Ling Kok Hung, Jeffrey Nuing Ibom, Chua Bee Hun and Lee Hun Tak, with a majority of 6,263 votes.
