KANGAR: The number of flood evacuees in Perlis rose by 198 to 4,230 overnight as floodwaters continued to rise in some areas, a spokesman of the state flood operations room said yesterday.

The evacuees, comprising 1,135 families, were being accommodated at 32 relief centres, he said. He also said that floodwaters rose in the southern part of Kangar last night but receded in the northern part.

Several roads in this town remained flooded, he added.

Meanwhile, Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu advised people in flood-prone areas to be on the alert and abide by the instruction to evacuate.

He said he had been informed that some people living by river banks were reluctant to move, thinking that the floodwaters were receding.

Md Isa, who toured several flood relief centres early yesterday, said the people should not take the risk of remaining in their homes in the face of rising floodwaters as the government had made available relief centres. — Bernama
