KUCHING: Lingga incumbent Simoi Peri of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) was surprisingly re-nominated despite prior announcement of her decision not to seek re-election.

“This is the request of the BN leadership that I continue to serve in Lingga constituency,” said Semoi, who won the seat in 2006.

Simoi told reporters yesterday she accepted the candidacy with open heart as the Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and the people still had the trust in her.

“This is also the request of PBB Woman Supreme council and members who would like to have a woman candidate in the legislature. They want to keep the status quo on the numbers of BN women representation in the legislature,” she added.

She hoped that the people would come all out to vote for BN because it is the party for the people.

Asked what she would do in the next five years if she were to be elected again, Simoi replied that she would continue with the development that she had planned and to ensure the approved state and federal government projects were implemented accordingly.

She would like to focus on the Lingga-Stumbin road, schools, basic infrastructure like water and electricity for her constituency.

“I like to uplift the agriculture sector to be the source of economic incomes for the people, especially the women in the longhouses or surrounding villagers, and continue to work hard so that there is always continuity in development and progress,” she enthused.

If elected, she pointed out, her main challenge would be to ensure continuous support from the people and to work closely with all the government departments and agencies.

Simoi is confident that she will be able to take any challenges from the opposition and to ensure that the people’s hearts are always with the BN government.

In the 2006 election, she defeated Abang Othman Abang Gom from PKR with 3,245 votes.
