KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and South Korea are expected to share their respective expertise in the field of sports and exchange technical knowledge in research.

According to National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong, the Korea National Sport University (KNSU) has formed a collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to share and carry out research on sports.

He said Malaysia’s prowess in sports like hockey, takraw, squash and badminton had attracted the attention of KNSU as a means of enhancing sports in both countries.

“The collaboration involves exchange of athletes, officials and research. We have identified a number of sports deemed medal prospects at the 2012 London Olympics and the ‘marriage’ can provide a boost to our hopes,” he told reporters after singing a Memorandum of Understanding with KNSU president Kim Jong Wook.

Zolkples said NSC was excited with the prospect although squash was not in the Olympic programme.

“We know South Korea is a powerhouse in archery, taekwondo and women’s hockey. So, this will be a good opportunity for our athletes to undergo training and enhance their skills,” he said.

KNSU is a renown sports university in South Korea because of its track record in producing world class athletes and coaches. — Bernama
